Review: Fever

Summary:Rhine and Gabriel have escaped the mansion, but danger is never far behind.

Running away brings Rhine and Gabriel right into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her fortune turns again. With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago - surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness.

The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous - and in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at twenty-five, time is precious. Worse still, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion...by any means necessary.

Review: This book was absolutely amazing! Normally a sequel tries really hard to be as good as the first which ruins a book because you can tell the author tried so hard, but this book did not disappoint! I think Lauren Destefano just has this amazing way of writing that is really hardly seen in other young adult books. The book starts off right where we ended with Wither, which I love. I can't stand when books have a few months missing in between and you're left wondering like what did they do for those few months? Anyway, I always love the characters that are brought to the table in these books, no one in Wither or Fever is exactly alike, everyone is so different and you have to wonder where in the world did she come up with someone like this?! There's no in between, you either love them or hate them. So many things unfold in this book, between the plot, and the characters back stories I just found it so amazing. Rhine starts to realize her sister wife Jenna had been keeping secrets from her and it really hurts her...I hope in the next book we hear these secrets because I felt betrayed by Jenna too, why didn't you tell me Jenna?! The detail that Destefano puts into her characters' emotions and surroundings really makes you feel like you're there and you're feeling what they're feeling. At points I really felt like I was running for my life away from the mansion, being chased. You feel the despair, the sick, the hurt, everything, and I loved that. I did like Wither better, but not because Fever was less impressive by any sense, I just always prefer book one on a trilogy/series because you're just getting to learn who the characters are and where their lives are at. I can't wait  for book three and find out what the heck is gonna go down and how everything will play out.

5/5 stars

Quote I liked: "Love unrequited is violent. He loves you so much that he's turned it into hate."

Meetings!

Yesterday I (Grace) went to Books Of Wonder (seems like we're always there) for a signing with Lauren Destefano, Cassandra Clare, and Holly Black. I was really excited to see Lauren Destefano because I absolutely love love loved Wither. Cassandra Clare's line was ridiculously long, as I suspected it would be, but I never imagined I'd be waiting THAT long, I was #70, and since people had a ridiculous amount of books for each author it seemed like I was #1201-32093584929. Needless to say I got to meet the authors and have my books signed, and they all gave out special treats which was super exciting! Also Josh Dibble was there, who appears to be fighting for the role of Jace in The Mortal Instruments movie...best of luck to him he was rather...handsome. All of the authors were ridiculously nice, and that's always a nice treat. Here are some pics!

Review: Wither

  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Hardcover: 368 pages
  • Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing; 1 edition (March 22, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1442409053

Summary: When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can’t bring herself to hate him as much as she’d like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband’s strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape--before her time runs out?

Review: They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but I saw the cover before I knew what the book was about and knew I wanted to read it. And it's a damn good thing too because I absolutely LOVED this book. I read it in one day because I could not put it down. I even had it open on my desk during class and was reading it while pretending to write notes. It's one of those books that you can not put down. There is a certain gross factor, as the man in the story marries and impregnates a 13 year old girl, but it was written so tastefully that you feel more sorry for the girl than you do grossed out. I automatically felt a closeness to Jenna and Rhine, and felt a part of their "sister wife" little circle. Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Cecily and her willingness to be married and have a baby, I felt so bad for her. She is still such a little kid in so many ways despite that she wants to be married and be a mother. Even an insignificant character Rowan, caught my affections and I can't wait until future books in the series when I can finally meet him for real. I have a love/hate relationship with Linden. From the start I viewed him as a semi-decent man, because of his love for Rose his first wife, and then his kindness towards Rhine and his obvious affection for her. I felt a sort of jealousy when it became clear he was sleeping with Jenna and Cecily. At first I didn't believe he was actually sleeping with Cecily, I thought it was Vaughn and he somehow made her believe it was Linden, but that wasn't the case. I would most definitely recommend this book, however, to a bit of an older audience as there is quite a bit of sex and intimacy.  14+ seems appropriate. I am so happy this is a trilogy and I can see what happens for Rhine and Gabriel in the future, I can not wait for the next two books! MUST READ!
